Mental Freedom

5 min read

Throughout a season, hardships reveal themselves constantly — psychologically, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. The objective is not to eliminate the roller coaster.

That’s impossible. The objective is to level it out enough so that your identity and performance are not controlled by every rise and every drop.

The highs.

The lows.

Doubt.

Winning streaks.

Slumps.

Family issues.

Relationships.

Business responsibilities.

Coaching dynamics.

Performance pressure.

This is the reality of competitive environments, especially professional sports.

Seasons are filled with adversity, but they are also filled with opportunities — opportunities to lean into what you already know you should be doing. Routines matter. Consistent habits matter. Healthy outlets matter. Support matters. In professional sports, support matters more than people want to admit.

We in the pros now.

Let’s be honest — this game is cutthroat. So yes, you should feel pressure. Pressure is not always the enemy. Sometimes pressure is confirmation that what you’re pursuing actually matters to you. If you feel nothing, maybe you don’t care enough.

The real question becomes: what do you do with the pressure?

Awareness has to become your primary tool, so make sure it is sharp, reliable, and assiduously developed. Awareness allows you to identify what belongs in your mind and what does not. It keeps you from becoming petulant during difficult moments. It steadies you when trepidation tries to creep in. It helps you remain phlegmatic and equanimous when the environment around you becomes chaotic.

Pressure exposes habits.Adversity exposes identity.Success exposes discipline.

I don’t want to spend time romanticizing my own journey or listing every obstacle I faced, but one thing remained true throughout my career: I always had talent, and I always had to prove myself. At every level.

One thing I understood early was the importance of ingratiating myself into the team environment. No player is bigger than the team, and no player succeeds without it. Roles change yearly. Responsibilities evolve yearly. Expectations rise yearly. Your level has to rise yearly too.

That requires sedulous work behind the scenes.

Routines matter. Consistent habits matter. Support matters. Healthy outlets matter. The strongest professionals are usually the ones who understand the environment they are operating within. Not to fight against it, but to discover how to move effectively inside of it.

Awareness.

Who are you in different environments? How do you respond to pressure? What habits govern your life daily? Is your support system actually strong or simply convenient? What drains your energy? What edifies your spirit?

Once your environments begin to align, your performance changes. Your energy changes. Your confidence develops. Your mindset sharpens. A different season begins internally before it ever reveals itself externally.

That’s when the switch flips.

In reflection, you begin realizing everything you have already overcome just to arrive where you are now. Your approach becomes intentional. Your energy becomes intentional. Your preparation becomes intentional.

When I organized my environments, my outlook on the game transformed. I began paying attention to everything — body language, timing, emotional shifts, energy, habits, communication, preparation. Through awareness and experience, I discovered who I wanted to become.

Adaptable.

Confident.

Accountable.

Patient.

Competitive.

Reliable.

Willing.

Who do you want to be known as in this game?

Sacrifice becomes part of the equation too.

What are you willing to sacrifice?

Free time.

Comfort.

Social life.

Vacations.

Moments of ease.

Something will inevitably have to be placed to the side for you to reach where you say you want to go. Every level demands a different version of you. Find your approach. Experiment. Reflect. Keep what serves your growth and remove what compromises it.

Operate with stoicism during adversity and benignity toward those around you. Not every battle requires emotional reaction. Some moments simply require steadiness.

And in the end — be yourself.

Do not forget who you are.

Do not forget how you arrived here.

Do not forget the people who helped you along the way.

Remember the moments that shaped you — both positively and negatively. All of it matters. Remember the adversity you overcame. Remember what worked while you were climbing.

Be decisive when your moment arrives.

Trust the work you’ve done.(And if you haven’t worked, eventually that truth will reveal itself too.)

Trust the habits you’ve built. Continue searching for ways to improve. Operate from knowing.

Knowing your strengths.Knowing your weaknesses.Knowing what brought you here.Knowing when evolution is necessary.Knowing your intentions.Knowing your internal motivation.

That internal motivation is what sustains growth when external validation disappears.

No fear.

No excuses.

No time to stop moving because the roller coaster never truly stops.

The drops only become steeper, which means the climb upward becomes even more challenging. But believe anyway. Continue anyway.

Because growth requires discomfort. This game does not reward mediocrity, fragility, or the inability to adapt during difficult moments.

Keep rising.

All things are possible through trust, intention, discipline, and Christ.

And honestly — would it even be worth it if it were easy?

You are one of them. We all know it. I know it, and deep down, you know it too.

You’ve already endured adversity in your life and found ways to overcome it. You’ve proven to yourself repeatedly that you are capable of finding solutions under pressure. But more importantly, you’ve shown a willingness to seek help when necessary.

That’s a separator.

Most people respond to discomfort by isolating themselves. They retreat inward. Nothing is inherently wrong with solitude, but in this profession, support becomes essential. Your support system becomes the landing spot while your internal habits become the engine that keeps you moving forward.

A few important questions for you:

What energy am I bringing onto the court?Am I confident?Am I aggressive?Am I emotionally composed or emotionally reactive? Is the game slowing down for me mentally?

The search is for mental freedom.

When the mind is free, instinct takes over. And when you are operating off instinct, you become dangerous because you are no longer overthinking. You are simply reacting from preparation and knowing.

That’s one of the ultimate goals:

Mental freedom.

Pure confidence.

Flow.

Knowing.

Collecting data without emotional interference.

It’s easy to become mentally off-balance when circumstances shift unexpectedly. But in the middle of difficult moments, there is always a decision to make.

Pay attention to the very first thought that enters your mind.

That thought matters.

It often determines the direction everything else moves afterward. That first thought can either align with your identity and goals, or it can completely contradict them. Factor in the circumstances. Factor in your emotional state. Everything matters.

Compartmentalize what deserves space in your mind and what does not.

You are one of the best playmakers I’ve ever seen with a basketball. Go be that.

You are not selfish, and everybody around you recognizes that. Your aggression actually makes life easier for your teammates and coaches because your pressure forces defenses to collapse and creates opportunities for everyone else.

Do not abandon who you are because of temporary difficulty.

Do not force the game either. Allow it to unfold naturally because your preparation, intention, and energy have already positioned you for success.

Continue trusting the process.

Continue understanding the process.

Continue sharpening your awareness.

Your time is here.

Control the pinball.

Welcome to the pros.

This life is not built for the weak — and we both know weakness isn’t you.
