The Game Within The Game: A Pace Story

There was a time when the game moved too fast.
Not just the game of basketball—but life. Words came out quicker than I meant them. Thoughts piled up in my head before I could sort them. Opportunities slipped through my fingers like sweat from a long workout. I was running, pushing, grinding… but I didn’t feel in control. And honestly, I didn’t know what to feel or how.
Then one day, I stopped.
It wasn’t dramatic. There was no defining moment. The world was on a pause at the same time (Covid). Just a quiet realization that while I had spent years training my body, I hadn’t given my mind and spirit the same discipline. The fire was there—but so was the frustration. The desire—but also the disconnect. That’s when I started looking for something deeper. I’m still on the journey currently.
That’s when I found P.A.C.E.
Patience. Awareness. Control. Empathy.
At first, it was about basketball. My game always had a certain rhythm. I wasn’t the fastest on the court, but I moved with purpose. I created space where others didn’t see it. I waited—not passively, but intentionally. That was patience.
Off the court, I had none even though I thought I did.
But I began practicing. Not performing—practicing. Like form shooting every morning, I repeated: All good things take time. I learned that progress wasn’t a leap; it was a series of daily deposits. Some days were small. Some days I missed. But I showed up. Slowly, my mindset changed. I wasn’t chasing everything. I slowed down. I started choosing.
That’s when awareness crept in.
There’s a moment in every game when the noise fades, and you just know. You read a play before it happens. Feel the defender’s anticipating or fall aslep. See a cut out of the corner of your eye. That kind of presence—I wanted it in life. I started listening—not just to people, but to myself and my surroundings. I asked: What am I feeling right now? What am I avoiding? What am I resisting? What makes me… me?
The answers haven’t always pretty. But they’ve been honest.
Then came control.
Not control over others or situations—but over how I responded. The game taught me that a bad call wasn’t the end, just another play. A moment isn’t defining; it’s just a moment. Could I apply that off the court? Could I come back to focus after frustration? I learned about my locus—what I could control, what I couldn’t. That clarity didn’t come naturally. It took stillness. It took humility.
And finally, empathy.
The missing piece. The piece that forced me to lead with my heart and feel with it also.
It’s one thing to be aware of yourself. It’s another to connect—with feeling. Not fixing, not teaching—just feeling what someone else feels. I struggled and still do times with feeling. But my surroundings and resources helped me become more aware.
It changed how I coached. How I mentored. How I communicated (still a work in progress). I began to meet people where they were, not where I wanted them to be.
P.A.C.E. became more than a tool. It became a way of life.
It’s how I teach now.
It’s how I build relationships.
It’s how I listen.
It’s how I lead.
This journey didn’t come from a textbook. It came from tension. From failure. From reflection. From being tired of not being whole. It started with basketball—but it led me to me. And now, P.A.C.E. is how I help others find balance and clarity in their game, their growth, and their lives.
Because the real game is within.
